Civil Engineer

Civil Engineering supporting WMATA

Location: Washington D.C. area (remote to begin, eventually in Landover, MD)
Salary will be based on experience and qualifications.

  • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects.
  • Plan and design transportation or hydraulic systems and structures, following construction and government standards, using design software and drawing tools.
  • Compute load and grade requirements, water flow rates, and material stress factors to determine design specifications.
  • Inspect project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications and safety or sanitation standards. 
  • Estimate quantities and cost of materials, equipment, or labor to determine project feasibility.
  • Prepare or present public reports, such as bid proposals, deeds, environmental impact statements, and property and right-of-way descriptions.
  • Maintains full familiarity with plans, specifications, construction schedules and contractor's plans on assigned contracts, Adjacent Construction Project Manual, JDAC Procedures and, current safety regulations relative to assigned projects in order to be knowledgeable of the contractor's obligations and Project Manager's responsibilities with respect thereto.
  • Disseminates information to office and field staff and internal stakeholder offices as required to keep all pertinent Authority personnel accurately informed of relevant matters.
  • Establishes and maintains job record files for assigned projects. Reviews contractor's Critical Path Method or bar chart progress schedules as applicable and maintains current, marked-up copies of such schedules. Coordinates schedule and progress reviews with Scheduling Engineers, contractor representatives, Project Manager, and others as required. Prepares and distributes schedule and progress reports based upon projected and actual completion dates for assigned contracts.
  • Assists construction inspectors and contractor’s representatives in clarification of contract drawings and specifications relative to assigned contracts.
  • Assists the Project Manager in reviewing contractor's claims determining merit of claims, and negotiating cost and/or time adjustments based upon such claims.
  • Prepares change orders and contract modifications in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assists Estimating Engineers in preparing cost and/or time estimates for pending change orders and contract modifications.
  • Reviews and processes contractor's submittal of shop and working drawings and material samples and distributes as required.
  • Returns submittal to the contractor with appropriate comments and approval status. Disseminates information pertaining to submittal to the field staff, as required.
